Biography/History:

The completion of the Mississippi Central Railroad fostered the birth of a new town known as Winona, located in Montgomery County, Mississippi, in 1861. The railroad, located at the junction of Summit Street, Central Avenue, and Hampton Street, brought many travelers needing accommodations to the town of Winona. The Winona Hotel, located on the south side of Hampton Street, fulfilled the needs of many travelers. In 1919, The Winona Hotel, owned by H. G. Kirstein, was flourishing. Traveling salesmen particularly liked to stop at the hotel and set up shop. Between 1925 and 1935, The Winona Hotel caught fire and apparently was destroyed.
