Applications for funds, with supporting documentation, from the museum grant program which was created by the Legislature in 1997 with House Bill No. 1733. Section 35 of this bill established the "1997 Museum Fund" as a separate fund within the State Treasury which was to be used for the "acquisition, construction, development, restoration, renovation and repair" of museums in Mississippi (Chapter 535, General Laws of Mississippi 1997). The legislation also provided that the Board of Trustees of the Department of Archives and History was responsible for deciding which grant proposals were awarded funds. The program was initially under the department's Historic Preservation Division but was moved shortly after it began to the State Historical Museum's pervue.
The nineteen approved grant files contain the application, acceptance and memorandum of agreement, correspondence, reports, and payment requests/warrants. Some of them may also contain plans and/or design documents and exhibit proposals. The fifteen non-approved grant files contain the application and the letter of non-approval from the department. There are also files for several other grant programs that the State Historical Museum oversaw.
