      In 2001, as part of the Mississippi Cultural Development Act, legislation was passed (House Bill 1637) in order to provide funding for the historic preservation of courthouses, schools, and certain historic properties in Certified Local Government communities. This legislation (Chapter 541, General Laws of Mississippi 2001) enacted the initial phase of this grant program. Properties such as courthouses, school buildings, and other historically significant structures were given the initiative to pursue grant applications for preservation projects. A second phase of this grant program was enacted in 2002 (Chapter 543, General Laws of Mississippi 2002).

      This series mainly consists of the grant applications sent in by prospective communities.

      The applications contain project descriptions and supporting documentation including photographs, architectural drawings, letters of recommendation, and resumes of contractors and architects. This series also contains documents of the Staff Committee that assessed the grant applications such as memos, project summaries, lists of grant applications, and funding recommendations. The applications are grouped together by year and arranged therein by project number.
