Files documenting the activities of the Surveyor General of the lands south of Tennessee (i.e., Alabama, Mississippi, and eastern Louisiana). The correspondence includes letters to and from a number of important figures in land surveying in early America, including Gideon Fitz, Thomas Freeman, John Coffee, Isaac Briggs, Seth Pease, Levin Wailes, and B.L.C. Wailes. Albert Gallatin, as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, is also represented in the collection by a significant amount of correspondence. Besides a photostatic copy of a plat of the boundary line between Mississippi and Alabama, there are few other plats or maps in the series. However, researchers should be aware that other records, particularly the salary accounts, frequently note legal land descriptions and the names of landowners.
