Series 1337: Southeast Regional Office Files. 1975-1992 Economic & Community Development
Series 1337: Southeast Regional Office Files. 1975-1992.
Economic and Community Development. (RG 76).
Files of the Southeast Regional Office whose duties included offering comprehensive assistance to area businesses and business owners in such matters as procuring loans, meeting local and federal requirements, identifying resources, formulating market plans and strategies, and providing employment and labor information. To such ends the office gathered information from numerous sources pertaining to all aspects of a county and region. Data collected emphasized population statistics (race, age, births, deaths, urban and farm censuses, education levels offered and attained, health care, and housing), and labor statistics (income, wages, manufacturing and industry profiles, employment and unemployment, and sales). The Southeast Regional office worked with the following counties: Covington, Forrest, Greene, George, Harrison, Hancock, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Marion, Pearl River, Perry, Stone, and Wayne.
The files contained in this series generally fall into two categories: specific county data files and office reference files. Specific county data files include various statistical reports such as Data Bank Information computer printouts (compiled using many state and private agency statistics, e.g., Board of Health, Employment Security Commission, and others) and R & D Center publications such as the Quick Reference Data summaries, Labor Supply Data and Community Data. There are a number of additional files for Jackson County which contain Chamber of Commerce publications, directories, and reports of Jackson County efforts at economic and community development.
Office reference files include more general and/or comprehensive statistical surveys (population and labor) of the Southeast Region as well as information for other counties in the state. Other reference files contain source material listings, Small Business Administration guidelines, loan program information, leadership training plans and schedules, Employment Security Commission newsletters, and ADT (Average Daily Traffic) county traffic maps produced by the Mississippi Highway Dept.
Most of the materials are dated in the 1980s, although there are some items with earlier dates. Generally, however, the information statistics collected were the most recent available.
