Series 1487: MARIS Land Use Maps. 1972-1973.
Institutions of Higher Learning (RG 39). Research and Development Center (SG 8).
Photomaps (uncontrolled) and/or copy film negatives identified by township and range for each county of Mississippi. These maps were compiled from NASA high altitude photographs taken in 1972 and 1973, and prepared in whole or in part by the Mississippi Research and Development Center, Mississippi Automated Resources Information Service (MARIS).
The keyed maps are extremely detailed: not only are terrain features identified, but buildings and other structures -- residential, commercial, institutional, utilitarian, and industrial -- are noted as well. Buildings and structures are further identified as to exact usage. For example, residences are identified as single family, multifamily, mobile home, etc.; institutional buildings are identified as educational, religious, governmental, military, and so on. Transportation, communication, and utilities features are similarly detailed: port and airport facilities, highway right of way, railroad right of way, pipeline right of way, power transmission right of way, etc. Land use is also identified: for example, agricultural use is subdivided into cropland and pasture, orchards, etc.; open space subdivided into parks, playgrounds, and campgrounds or golf courses, and so forth. Terrain features are also subdivided in detail: forest is identified as deciduous, evergreen, mixed, or other; wetlands are identified as freshwater marsh, saltwater marsh, or swamp, etc.
Each map has a sheet index which shows the location of townships and ranges in that particular county. Approximate scale is 1:24,000. "Section grid and toponymy were visually transferred from USGS quadrangle series maps." Maps are boxed by county.
