Series 1689: Project Files. 1977-1996.
Central Data Processing Authority (RG 111).

Work files pertaining to major projects (costing $250,000 or more, and generally telecommunications and/or computer networks) undertaken by CDPA (Central Data Processing Authority) and encompassing the scope of a project from its beginning through completion.

Projects generally proceeded in the following order:

1. Request by an agency for goods and/or services
2. Consultations with resultant plans and designs leading to RFP(s) (CDPA staff working in conjunction with agency personnel)
3. RFPs (Request for Proposal) released and publicized
4. Bids submitted - contracts with winning bidders drawn up
5. Project begun with continued oversight (including incremental payment approvals) by CDPA staff
6. Project completed

These files contain not only documentation of the general procedure for each project, but include correspondence, memos, faxes, updates, reference materials and staff notes for the duration of each project.

Agency requests have become much more complicated as technological advances have occurred - the earliest project files (1977-1987) are smaller (and projects not nearly so costly), and have been grouped together in an alphabetical agency listing. Later projects (1987 forward) are identified by a project number as well as by agency, and are often documented with numerous files. The CDPA staff assigned the project number as well as an agency code which is shown on the file folders. The agency code has been interpreted into the agency name, and has not been used in the series listing below.
