Series 1696: Mississippi Casualties in Korean Conflict. 1950-1954.
Veterans' Affairs Board (RG 44).

Casualty lists reported by the U.S. Department of Defense and disseminated by the Veterans Affairs Board. Casualty categories are “killed in action,” “died of wounds,” “missing in action,” “wounded,” “injured,” and “returned to military control/duty,” listed by each branch of military service. Each entry has the service member’s rank and name, name of next of kin, and address. Also included are: a by-county list maintained by the Veterans’ Affairs Board of Mississippians who were killed in action or died of wounds; names of Mississippians released from North Korean prison camps as part of Operation BIG SWITCH/LITTLE SWITCH; and lists of findings of death and death determinations. No dates upon which the casualty occurred or units of assignment are recorded with any of these lists.

Research Note: A finding of death is made in the case of personnel missing in action for more than one year where information to support a continued presumption of survival does not exist. A determination of death is made in cases where supporting evidence is available, usually from eye witnesses, that a soldier has died even though his body has not been recovered and identified.
