Series 1768: Maps of State Owned Lands. 1934-1936.
Work Projects Administration. (RG 60)

Two different types of maps showing state-owned lands. The first type of map shows state owned lands as of January 1, 1936, “prepared under the direction of the Office of the Land Planning Specialist, Land Use Planning Section, Land Utilization Division, Resettlement Administration in cooperation with Works Progress Administration and Office of the State Land Commission.” These include oversized photocopies, 8 ½ x 11 reductions, and five original maps. The maps show university lands and lieu lands, surface features, and county boundaries, and are divided by township, range, and section. Each map represents a “section” of the state, consisting of several counties. The sections are as follows:

Section 1: Pearl River, Hancock, Stone, Harrison, George, Jackson
Section 2: Lawrence, Walthall, Jefferson Davis, Marion, Covington, Lamar, Jones, Forrest, Wayne, Greene, Perry
Section 3: Adams, Wilkinson, Franklin, Amite, Lincoln, Pike
Section 4: Rankin, Simpson, Scott, Smith, Newton, Jasper, Lauderdale, Clarke
Section 5: Warren, Claiborne, Jefferson, Hinds, Copiah
Section 6: Issaquena, Humphreys, Sharkey, Yazoo, Holmes, Attala, Leake, Madison
Section 7: Washington, Sunflower, Leflore, Carroll, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster, Choctaw
Section 8: Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Panola, Lafayette, Yalobusha, Calhoun
Section 9: Tunica, DeSoto, Tate, Marshall, Benton, Tippah, Union
Section 10: Alcorn, Tishomingo, Prentiss, Pontotoc, Lee, Itawamba, Monroe, Chickasaw
Section 11: Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Winston, Noxubee, Neshoba, Kemper

There are reductions for all of the sections. There are large photocopies of the original maps for sections 1 and 3 through 9 only. For sections 2, 11, and 12, only the reduction and the original map are available.

The second type of map shows single counties. Most of these read “State Owned Land as of January 1, 1934.” Though some of the maps are undated, these probably date from 1934 as well. Only twenty-nine counties are represented by individual maps in this series; please see the following page for a list.
