Series 1773: Governor's Messages and Communications to Legislature. 1814-1958.
Legislature (RG 47).
A small collection of messages from the Governor addressed to the members of the Legislature, primarily concerning bill approvals and vetoes, appointments, and nominations. Almost all of the materials are dated in the 1800s (two files are dated in the 1950s). From the beginning, messages from the Governor were incorporated into the daily proceedings of the Legislature which were ultimately published as the House and Senate journals for each year. The original messages in this series are part of the early working papers of the Legislature and are only a portion of each governor’s messages and communications to the Legislature.
Note: A compilation of all messages of the Governor to the Legislature for the years 1826-1861 may be found in boxes 7436 and 7437. This compilation consists of a 920-page typescript in which is transcribed, in chronological order, the text of every communication (inaugural addresses, appointments and resignations, bill approvals and vetoes, etc.) to the Legislature by the governors during these years. An accompanying notebook lists the messages as well as the pages within the House and Senate journals where each message is found. The origin of the compilation is unknown.
