      Incoming and outgoing correspondence related to various agencies of Mississippi state government, usually of a fairly routine nature. In an effort to keep the Lt. Governor apprised of agency activities and needs, agencies sent the Lt. Governor pertinent news items, notifications of administration changes (personnel, policy and organization) and monthly, quarterly and annual reports. Activities of the Lt. Governor related to specific agencies are also documented in these files (trade missions for Economic Development, interventions on behalf of prisoners to Dept. of Corrections, and so forth).

      In addition, these files contain a moderate number of communications (letters as well as signed petitions) from the public regarding specific actions of agencies, either requesting the Lt. Governor’s help in averting or supporting these actions, or thanking the Lt. Governor for favorable votes and/or endorsements. Correspondence from constituents is often annotated, with notes referencing telephone calls and letters. Occasionally, there are requests for letters of recommendation.

      Files dated 1980-1992 overlap slightly with the files dated 1979-1980. Evidently, a new and long-term set of files (1980-1992) was created sometime in 1980, and 1980 materials were filed in both places.

      Arrangement is alphabetical by agency title. However, an agency name is not consistently established: an agency might be called “Mississippi Dept. of Transportation” and files are under “M,” or the agency might be called “Transportation” and files are under “T.”
