      Working files for the Federal Writers' Project national and state picture books. For the state guide, entitled "The Mississippi Picture Book," the series includes the following: edited drafts of text; a 1940 WPA technical guide for compiling state picture books; lists of photographs required; outlines of other state picture books; book dummies; and correspondence. In 1940, the Mississippi Writers' Project assumed the task of coordinating the southern section of the national picture book, entitled "The United States of America: A Pictorial Guide to Democracy." Correspondence with other southern states and the WPA Writers' Program national office concerning the production of this National Guide Book Series publication is included. There are no photographs, however, and it is unclear whether these books were ever published. Researchers should note that oversize, hand-drawn proofs for several different versions of the Mississippi Pictorial Guides can be found in series 443, Scrapbooks. Scans of the proofs are also available through the online catalogue record for series 443.
