Series 1894: School Building Photographs and Illustrations. 1927-1960; n.d.

      Photographs, postcards, clippings and Illustrations of public school buildings located in the majority of Mississippi counties. The series consist primarily of photographs and negatives of school buildings. Most of the buildings are identified and dated. However, it is not always clear whether the date written on the photograph is the date the photograph was taken or the date of building construction. A few of the photographs are of a miscellaneous nature. In addition, the series also includes a small number of postcards, newspaper clippings and illustrations of school buildings.

      The photographs and negatives have been matched and are boxed separately. Arrangement is by county followed by miscellaneous items. The postcards are boxed with the photographs within the county arrangement. The newspaper clippings have been photocopied and are foldered and boxed separately from the photographs. A complete listing of the photographs, postcards, clippings, and illustrations is provided in the tables in the Official Records Photograph Guide.

Series 1894 Photograph, Postcard and Illustration Listing

      The photograph, postcard and illustration tables consist of the following data elements:

Photograph #:
Sequential number assigned to each photograph/postcard by the archivist. This number is written on the back of the photograph/postcard preceded by the series number (Example: 1894-1, 1692-2, etc.).

Counties:
County code for the county in which the image was located. For county code see the following list:

The community identified in the image. A tentative location is supplied by the archivist in brackets in cases were the image was unidentified.

Date:
Date provided on the image. Most of the photographs are dated. However, it is not always clear whether the date written on the photograph is the date the photograph was taken or the date of building construction. None of the postcards are dated. A tentative date is supplied by the archivist in brackets in cases were the image was undated.

Box #:
Number of box within which the photograph/postcard/illustration is housed. See contents listing (above) for box location. Oversized photographs and illustrations are foldered and located in Record Group Map Drawer. This location is indicated in the box Column of the tables.

Folder #:
The specific folder within the box in which the photograph/illustration is located. Only a very small number of oversized photographs are foldered. The majority of the photographs are boxed without folders.

Form:
The following codes are used to describe the form of the photograph, negative, or postcard:

  • op: original print
  • on: original negative
  • pc: postcard
  • il: illustration

Color:
The color of the photograph/postcard/illustration is listed as either “b” for black and white or “c” for color.

Negative #:
Negatives are identified by the code “on” in the form column. The negatives have tentatively been matched with the photographs and assigned the same sequential number as the corresponding photograph. Negatives, which did not have a corresponding photograph, have been assigned their own sequential number.

Negative Box #:
Number of box within which the negative is housed. See contents listing (above) for box location.
