Series 2144: Death Certificates and Indexes - Microfilm; Fiche. 1912-1943
Health, Dept. of. Vital Statistics

A microform collection of copies of official state death certificates with accompanying name indexes. Indexes may be found on a set of microfilm (RG 51, MF 1-8) or a set of microfiche (index card box at reference desk); the microfilm is both more comprehensive (1912-1943) and legible than the microfiche (1912-1937) with one exception . the fiche is easier to read when looking for certificates dated 1930 and 1931. These indexes are arranged alphabetically by surname, although the alphabetical arrangement for some years (1925-1926, 1930-1943) is determined by Soundex coding. After obtaining the death certificate number from the index, the death certificate itself can be located on the microfiche shelved in a cabinet at the Archives reference desk.
