Historical Note

The effort to establish the Natchez National Historical Park had its origin in 1987, when the Board of Trustees of the Department of Archives and History and the Natchez/Adams County Historical Society met to discuss ways of preserving and interpreting the site of Fort Rosalie. These discussions eventually led, in 1988, to a number of historical and civic groups, the City of Natchez, Adams County, and the Department of Archives and History forming a coalition to have the historic districts of Natchez declared a .national historical park. by Congress and to acquire the Fort Rosalie site, Melrose mansion, and the William Johnson House for the National Park Service. The response by Congress to the proposal was positive, and the new national park was established in 1991.
