Legislature (RG 47).

      These petitions, submitted to the state legislature, address grievances and concerns for various causes: divorces, emancipation requests, county or municipal business, on behalf of an individual in a court case or an individual widowed or orphaned, requests that counties be preserved intact and not divided into new counties or vice versa, pardons, passage of advantageous laws, protection of the populace (particularly from the evils of liquor), relief of the poor and bereaved (victims of disaster or fate), permission for free blacks to live and or move freely, and requests from free blacks to return to slavery so that they can remain with their families. These petitions often include a long list of signatures.
