Series 2374: 1984 Louisiana World Exposition Files. 1982-1985.
Economic & Community Development (RG 76).

Records pertaining to the Mississippi Pavilion at the Louisiana World Exposition (World’s Fair) held in New Orleans from May 12 – November 11, 1984. Materials include correspondence, reports, contracts, minutes, tourist brochures, and photographs. The records originally had their own classification scheme, a scheme which has been preserved here. Many of the files had no classification assigned to them originally, so these have simply been grouped together as general files.

The Mississippi Legislature appropriated approximately 4 million dollars to the Mississippi Department of Economic Development for the design, construction and promotion of the pavilion. By executive order, Governor William Winter created the Mississippi World’s Fair Council, Inc., as the organization specifically charged with planning and promoting Mississippi’s participation in the Fair. For a more complete picture of the makeup of the Mississippi World’s Fair Council and the operation of the Mississippi Pavilion, researchers are urged to examine the Legislature’s PEER Committee report, “Review of Expenditures and Operations of the Mississippi Pavilion at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition” located in the general files in Box #20918 of this series.
