Series 2400: Educational Matters and Disbursements -- Microfilm. 1926-1937.
Education, Dept. of (RG 50).

A miscellany of education-related documents of the Board of Education on two rolls of microfilm, with Board disbursement records mixed throughout on both rolls. The disbursement records include agricultural high schools and junior colleges, as well as county and municipal separate school districts.

Materials from 1926-1936 (MF# 37084) contain correspondence, reports, statistics, resolutions, court documents, and a great deal of financial data, mostly concerning the disbursement of funds. Of particular interest among the records are the following: Statistics and facts about agricultural high schools, 1929-1930; state census data for 1933; a four-page article or essay titled “The Place of the Agricultural High School”; telegrams from a number of companies and organizations offering relief funds for the great flood of 1927; school district budgets for two orphanages in Hinds County; letters related to State Superintendent of Education W. F. Bond’s political campaign in 1935; and a list of books adopted by the State High School Textbook Commission, 1927.

Materials from 1933-1937 (MF# 37085) contain a great many records related to disbursement of funds, but also include many other interesting documents. Of special note is an article written by P. H. Easom titled “Some Facts About Negro Schools in Mississippi,” which details the disparities between school facilities, farm ownership and teachers’ salaries for blacks and whites. Another noteworthy item is a study of the “holding power” of senior colleges vs. junior colleges over a five year period, which includes a comparison of the grades of students who entered as freshmen in junior colleges vs. freshmen who entered in senior colleges. Yet another document provides a comparison of salaries of black teachers and length of school terms in the southern states. As with Microfilm Roll #37084, a majority of the correspondence, reports, and other documents on Microfilm Roll #37085 deal with funding and other financial matters.
