Series 2477: Senators’ Reference Files. 1974-2003.
Legislature (RG 47)

This series currently contains records of two state senators:

  • Reference files maintained by Senator Carl Jackson (Jack) Gordon, Jr., representing the 8th Senate District of Mississippi. Though a few of the files date back to Gordon’s tenure as a member of the House of Representatives from 1972-1980, the bulk of the records in this series date from 1980-1986, during his earliest Senate terms. Though the Senator maintained reference files on many topics, a majority of them in this series deal with educational matters. Health and public welfare are also heavily represented, as are budgetary matters and appropriations. Materials include correspondence, legislation, newspaper clippings, notes, and general materials such as seating charts and senate calendars. These files have been left in their original order, which is a very rough chronological arrangement. The dates given below represent the bulk of the dates in the box, not the entire span of dates. Most of the material related to the Institutions of Higher Learning may be found in boxes 19902, 19903, and 19904.
  • Select photocopied correspondence of Senator Robert H. (Rob) Smith, representing the 35th Senate District of Mississippi, with legislative summaries. A few items date from Smith’s election to the House of Representatives in 1979, but the bulk of the material is from his long tenure in the Senate (1984-2003).
  • Reference files of Senator Robert H. (Rob) Smith. File contents date between 1988-2003, and include original correspondence, legislation, newspaper clippings, notes, photographs, and other materials. The files are arranged alphabetically by topic. Senator Smith served as chairman of the Senate Corrections Committee, so the topics of corrections, juvenile justice and youth courts are particularly well-represented. Other main topics include children’s issues, arts and music in education, rural revitalization, and veterans’ affairs. Extensive files may also be found on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC), two organizations with which Senator Smith was actively involved. Many other topics may also be found in the files. Certain oversize items have been relocated, as have a few video cassettes. A list of the video cassettes may be found on the following page.
