Series 2537: Fraternal Benefit Society "Dead" Files. 1912-1988; n.d.
Insurance, Dept. of (RG 40)

Files concerning Mississippi fraternal benefit societies that, for various reasons (financial failure, license suspension, etc.), no longer operate as insurance providers. Materials contained in the files include correspondence between the Insurance Commissioner and fraternal order officers, articles of incorporation and bylaws, blank/sample insurance policies, receipts for securities, proceedings of fraternal meetings, and financial statements. A few membership lists are included, and for one organization (Bathsheba Grand Chapter, Order Eastern Star) there is an insurance examiner’s special examination report. Also, two oversized newsletters from the Mosaic Templars of America have been filed separately in an oversized box. Most, if not all, of the societies represented in this series were exclusively African-American organizations. The bulk of the material dates from the 1920s and 1930s.
