Series 2575: Copa Casino Files. 1992-2005.
Economic & Community Development (RG 76)

Files pertaining to the litigation between the Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport (under the authority of the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development) and Gulfside Casino Partnership (doing business as Copa Casino). Materials include depositions and other lawsuit papers, correspondence, a Port Authority master plan, presentations by engineering consultants, and various architectural drawings and site plans of the proposed casino. Gulfside Casino Partnership leased State Port land for their gaming vessel, the Copa Casino, in April of 1994. Plans called for a resort hotel associated with the casino to be constructed at some point in the future. When the Mississippi State Port Authority decided not to renew the lease, due to expire in 1999, because of increased demand for shipping activities and the resultant needed expansion of port facilities, litigation between the parties ensued. Most of the documents in this series are related to this lawsuit, Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport and Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development vs. Gulfside Casino Partnership, Cause No. 96.01672, Harrison County Chancery Court, First Judicial District. It should be noted that copies of all filings with the court are not included in these files. Besides the lawsuit, other records in this series relate to the lease and its renewal, efforts by the Port Authority to obtain engineering expertise in developing the port, and the port’s Master Plan for Fiscal Years 1993-1997+.
