Series 2611: “All Shook Up” Museum Exhibit Curator’s Files. 1988-2001.
Dept. of Archives and History (RG 31). Public Information (SG 6).
Files belonging to Christine Wilson, curator of an exhibit at the Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History titled “All Shook Up: Mississippi Roots of American Popular Music,” which was on display there from February 18th to August 31st, 1990. The exhibit catalog, featuring all the photographs in the exhibit plus expanded text by Wilson, was published in 1995. These files contain correspondence and other papers pertaining to the exhibit and the catalog, photographs, clippings, soundtracks and video footage for the exhibit, among other materials.
The files document the development of the exhibit, and its subsequently published catalog, through all stages of their development. Included are notes regarding the inception of the exhibit, correspondence concerning permissions for use of photographs and artifacts, ads and other publicity, text for the displays and the catalog, grant applications and related correspondence, reel-to-reel soundtracks for the exhibit, U-matic broadcast-quality video cassettes with footage of performances by jazz musicians Willie Dixon and Milt Hinton, and a short documentary on videotape that was created in conjunction with the exhibit as part of a loan program to schools and civic groups. Photographs of performers in all the genres of music covered by the exhibit – blues, jazz, country, gospel, urban blues, rhythm and blues, and rock – are included as well, with some of the oversize images boxed separately. One phonograph record (45 rpm) is included in this series: A recording of Willie Cobbs performing “C.C. Rider,” with “Hey Little Girl” on the flip side. Correspondence and other files are arranged alphabetically by folder title; other materials are boxed separately. Available only on reel audiotape is a recording of a moderated program from 1990 featuring Willie Dixon and blues scholar Jim O’Neal.
Following its display at the Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History in Jackson, the “All Shook Up” exhibit was donated to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi, for permanent display.
