The Mid-South Regional Commission was a four-state regional development entity formed in the late 1970s under the provisions of Title V of the Federal Regional Economic Development Act of 1965. It includes the non-Appalachian counties of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The first co-chairman of the commission in1979 was Governor Cliff Finch of Mississippi. This commission was designed to allow the Federal and state governments to work together in a coordinated program of economic planning and development to resolve the complex problems of lagging regional economies. The files in this series document the formation of the Mid-South Regional Commission and the beginnings of its work during the Finch administration.
