Series 2650: Legal Files. 1985-1991.
Governor’s Office (RG 27). Administration of Raymond Edwin Mabus.

Files on various legal issues, or at least the legal aspects of certain issues, that arose during the Mabus Administration. Most of the documents seem to have been created or maintained by two individuals: Tom Perrone, Director of Administration, and Leyser Q. Morris, Legal Counsel. Major topics include the Ayers Case; the legal struggle between Governor Mabus and the Mississippi Adjutant General; the Mississippi National Guard and its performance during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; municipal charters; and various extradition and correctional issues, besides many other topics. Litigation files are boxed separately, and include information on lawsuits involving gambling, jail overcrowding, redistricting, and other issues. Materials include correspondence, internal memoranda, notes, clippings, court documents, and other items. Arrangement is alphabetical by folder title.

ACCESS NOTE

Due to the inclusion of privacy-sensitive legal files, this series is restricted from public access. A request for access detailing the exact information required must be submitted in writing to the Director, Division of Archives and Records Services. The file(s) will have to be screened by an archivist and possibly an attorney from the Attorney General’s office first, so there will be a waiting period, the length of which will depend on staff availability and the amount of information requested. The requester will be notified once the review is completed. Therefore researchers are strongly encouraged to contact the Archives in writing in sufficient time for the review to be accomplished before undertaking any research into these records.
