Series 2686: Hurricane Camille response files. 1969-1970, n.d..
Forestry Commission (RG 46)
Files related to the Forestry Commission’s response to Hurricane Camille, which made landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at Pass Christian on August 17, 1969. The hurricane affected 1.8 million acres of forestland in 12 counties, with Hancock, Harrison, Lamar and Pearl River counties being the hardest hit, and destroyed 1.2 billion board feet of sawtimber and 1 million cords of pulpwood. The Commission’s recovery efforts were coordinated by a special Governor’s Forest Disaster Salvage Council and focused on salvaging as much sawtimber and pulpwood that could be saved before insects or rot rendered it unusable, and on fire prevention in forestland covered in debris and felled trees. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, statistics and figures on affected forestland, industry publications and research articles, proofs of Camille-related fire prevention posters, and Disaster Salvage Council membership lists. General files are arranged chronologically by month from August 1969–March 1970; subject files are arranged alphabetically.
