      Notifications of building renovations or demolitions sent to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in accordance with the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP). Notifications are sent by the contractors engaged to work on a particular building and must contain a plan for the safe removal of any asbestos discovered in the course of work. Site inspections by the DEQ are undertaken at the agency’s discretion and in response to complaints. Public, religious and charter school buildings are regulated by the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986, which requires triennial asbestos inspections of all school buildings by a trained and licensed inspector and that all custodial staff have asbestos awareness training. Schools are also responsible for preparing asbestos management plans and taking action to reduce and prevent asbestos hazards.

      Records are organized in three groups: Administrative files and notification logs; AHERA files; and notification files. All files are arranged alphabetically within their groupings. Later records accessions have been alphabetized separately. The first accession dates are 1983-1997, and the second dates are 1993-2003, with the bulk being 1996-1999. Types of records include correspondence, notification forms, plans, court orders, and inspection reports. Box 30461 also contains a set of inventories corresponding to the order in which the files were packed by the agency. Although the files are no longer alphabetized in the same way, these inventories do include date ranges for each folder.
