Series 2712: Economic Development Grant Files. 1987-2009.
Mississippi Development Authority (RG 76).
Grant files from projects intended to bolster local industry in Mississippi. Although the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development (now Mississippi Development Authority) was responsible for funding and monitoring projects, funding was provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant program, administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Typical projects sought to improve infrastructure, such as access roads and water and sewage lines, for factories and industrial parks seeking to expand or locate in Mississippi. Projects were required to create a certain number of jobs in the community, with a specific portion of those set aside for low or moderate income individuals. Emphasis was also placed on employing women, especially female heads of households, and minorities. Grantees were monitored during the grant award period and subject to audit at the agency’s discretion even after the conclusion of the grant; the regular audits submitted yearly to the State Auditor by municipalities and counties were generally used for this purpose.
Files include the original grant application, correspondence, grant progress monitoring reports, maps, and final certificates of closure with a final tally of money spent. Oversize maps have been relocated to an oversize box, as indicated in the container list. The files are organized chronologically by grant award year and alphabetically within each year.
