      Black and white and color photographs, contact sheets and negatives from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and a predecessor agency, the Department of Natural Resources. Images span 1966-2000, but the bulk of the images date 1996-2000. The images document a variety of functions and responsibilities on the part of the agency. Images show members of the Choctaw tribe from the mid-80s (found in the Land and Water Resources division images); a 1996 oil spill in Collins, Mississippi; surface mining in Copiah County; lignite mining; the groundbreaking ceremony for the 1998 lower Pearl River restoration project; outreach events such as environmental fairs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection days in various cities, and storm drain stenciling; winners and competition shots from the now-defunct Miss Mississippi State Parks Pageant; field work and on-site inspections of environmental hazards; conventions and conferences attended by MDEQ representatives; personnel and training sessions from various divisions; the 1999 MDEQ Day celebration; retirement parties; Mississippi state parks, including J.P. Coleman, Percy Quin, Wall Doxey, John W. Kyle, Tishomingo, and Tombigbee; laboratory work from various divisions; and many other topics. Researchers should be aware that there are many unidentified or poorly identified and undated images. Images are alphabetized by subject.
