Series 2737: Briefing Files and Daily Schedules. 2004-2012.
Governor's Office (RG 27). Administration of Haley Reeves Barbour (RG 27).

Briefing files for events attended by Governor Haley Barbour, as well as his scheduling files. The briefing files make up the bulk of the series. They contain background information on events Governor Barbour would be attending, trips he would make, his television appearances and interviews, his speeches, etc. These files are arranged chronologically, and materials in them include such items as invitations, correspondence, itineraries, notes, news releases, speeches, talking points, and internal memoranda from the Governor’s policy advisors or scheduling staff. While numerous subjects are covered in the briefing files, some of them are covered more extensively than others, such as major economic development projects, boards or commissions of which the Governor was a member, or natural disasters. Thus, for example, there is a great deal of information on the state’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina, the Toyota assembly plant in Blue Springs, the rebuilding of the State Port at Gulfport, and the Governor’s involvement with the Bond Commission. Barbour’s handwritten notes may be found throughout the files, frequently on the folders themselves.

The scheduling files consist of several different types of records. The daily schedules (2004-2010) are like daily event calendars for the Governor (and often the First lady as well). The records of scheduling meetings (2006-2009) document meetings where potential events for the Governor’s calendar were discussed and it was decided how they would be handled (attend, send regrets, send a surrogate to attend in the Governor’s place, etc.). “Regrets” (2009-2010) are correspondence to the Governor inviting him to events which the Governor was either unable or unwilling to attend, and so his staff sent his regrets. Note that in the earlier years of the Barbour Administration, regrets were filed chronologically with the other briefing files.
