      Administrative files related to publications written and compiled by the Federal Writers’ Project of the Works Projects Administration, including the Mississippi sections of the American Guide, American Encyclopedia, and America Eats cook book and guide to American eating, guides to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Delta, and the serviceman’s guides to Camp Shelby and area and Camp Van Dorn and area. Also included are a set of fiction stories and poem submitted to an unidentified magazine presumably published by the Writers’ Project. Of all these publications, the Mississippi American Guide appears to be the only work that was completed and published. Files consist of correspondence, particularly concerning the publication and distribution of the Mississippi American Guide (Mississippi: A Guide to the Magnolia State, available in the archival reading room upon request); manuals for producing the different guides; a set of recipes intended for the cook book; and for the Delta, Gulf Coast and serviceman’s guides, drafts of guide material. The material for Camp Shelby in box 10510 includes a 1939 pocket guide to Hattiesburg, a 1939 list of manufacturers in Hattiesburg, a 1941 Hattiesburg phone directory, and list of Camp Shelby’s staff officers from 1939-1942. Also included in this series is a set of artwork, mostly pen and ink drawings but also many block prints and some watercolors. The art seems to have been intended for use as source material for illustrations in different publications, and also appears to have been created mostly by Writers’ Project workers.
