Classification Commission (RG 70)

      Files and correspondence from the office of the Mississippi Classification Commissioner's executive director. After being consolidated with the Merit System Council in 1980 (Senate Bill 2200), the Classification Commission became the Mississippi State Personnel Board. The Commission (and State Personnel Board) was responsible for administering certain personnel functions for all Mississippi state agencies, namely, ensuring that job candidates met the minimum requirements for state employment, administering civil service exams for federally-funded agencies on the merit system, creating state compensation plans, and approving individuals' pay grade advancements and the classification or reclassification of particular positions.

      Files consist of correspondence and memoranda, including scattered correspondence pertaining to Walls, et al. vs. Mississippi Department of Public Welfare, a federal civil rights case in which the plaintiffs alleged racial discrimination in the state government's hiring practices and use of civil service examinations; material related to the implementation of House Bill 721, which consolidated Mississippi's three separate merit systems into the single Merit System Council; Merit Council meeting agendas and support files; files on job studies and other consulting work performed by the firm of Morris and McDaniel; a report on the state of affirmative action in state government (box 32068, folder "Affirmative action"); a set of organizational charts for all Mississippi state agencies in alphabetical order; and copies of executive orders and prospective legislation affecting the Classification Commission. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
