Series 2788: Pediatric Nursing Associate Program Files. 1975-1981.
Institutions of Higher Learning. University of Mississippi Medical Center (RG 39/SG11)

Administrative and course files from the Pediatric Nursing Associate Program run by the School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The six month program was designed for nurses with at least two years of experience to prepare those nurses who worked or aspired to work in pediatrics to better assist doctors in pediatric care. Nurses who successfully completed the course were awarded a certificate and sixty continuing education credits. The program was established by a 1972 grant from the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare that was intended to fund a Family Health Nurse Associate program focusing on adult and pediatric care. Due to a lack of nursing faculty, the family health nursing component was never initiated, but when the grant expired in 1977, the pediatric nursing component moved to the Continuing Education division of the School of Nursing.

Files consist of admissions correspondence, largely between program administrators and potential applicants; statements of students’ successful course completion; aggregated class scores for the National League of Nursing achievement test; invitations, programs, and speaker introduction remarks for various graduation ceremonies, including photographs of the 1981 ceremony; copies of the pretest administered to new students; course syllabi; various bound course materials; and a 1974 grant report and appendices.
