Series 2811: Historic Properties Director’s Files. 1971-2014.
Dept. of Archives and History (RG 31). Historic Properties (SG 5).

The documents in this series pertain to Jim Barnett’s years of service as the director of the Historic Properties Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH). Included are correspondence, event files, research files, reports, site information, and personal subject files. The arrangement was created based on particular themes in the files; for example, all files pertaining to events are grouped together.
The correspondence files contain both correspondence written by Jim Barnett and correspondence received specifically from MDAH. All correspondence is arranged chronologically.
The event files consist of both annual events and singular events or workshops. The annual events are ordered alphabetically, followed by singular events and workshops in chronological order from 1978-2005. Many of the event files contain newspaper clippings and photographs.
The research files are in their original order as received and contain information pertaining to the Grand Village of Natchez Indians (GVNI). Following the subject and author files for GVNI are folders with information about Forks of the Road, the historic site in Natchez.
The reports are both annual and monthly reports dating from 1976-2007. They include information pertaining to the Historic Properties Division sites.
The site folders include project information of both MDAH properties and non-MDAH properties. They are arranged alphabetically by site and include Champion Hill, Grand Village of Natchez Indians, Historic Jefferson College, the Hollywood Site, Nanih Waiya State Park, Natchez National Historical Park, Windsor Ruins, and Winterville Mounds. There are also some site folders pertaining to potential projects which did not occur; these follow the Winterville Mounds folders.
The personal subject files at the contain personal files kept by Jim Barnett and include files on individuals, organizations, and his personal task lists. The individuals include persons whom he corresponded with regularly or who frequently helped with events. Included in the organization subject files are the accreditation documents from the American Association of Museums for the Grand Village of Natchez Indians.
Three CDs of digital material have been transferred to Electronic Archives. From the 2007 Natchez Powwow are two discs of digital images. From the 2009 Natchez Literary Cinema and Celebration is a disc containing a commemorative PowerPoint presentation.
