These materials consist of receipt warrants and forms for the Direct Tax Fund established in 1891 and implemented in the following years. The Fund’s purpose was to refund federal taxes collected under an 1862 act of Congress entitled, “An act for the collection of direct taxes in insurrectionary districts within the United States.” After verifying by affidavit the amount paid, an individual or their representative was entitled to a refund. Not all claims are accounted for. The items are arranged by claim number.
