Series 2907: Correspondence. 2012-2020.
Governor's Office (RG 27). Administration of Phil Bryant.

This series consists of correspondence and supplemental material consolidated by Phil Bryant and members of his administration during his two terms as Governor of the state of Mississippi from 2012 to 2020. There are a few items included that predate his two governing terms, but these could have been brought over from his office and staff during his time as Lt. Governor. The items included in this series are organized according to types of correspondence and categories.

The different categories of correspondence and a brief description of their organization are as follows:

  1. Out-of-State Letters: These are letters from either the Governor himself or one of his advisors acknowledging his absence from the state of Mississippi, how long he will be gone, who he is with, and usually are sent in response to an individual requesting his presence. Supplemental information is occasionally included with a staff member helping answer any questions which may have been intended for Bryant. His reasons for being out of state vary. Organization is by month and year.
  2. House Bill # 1523 Correspondence: Educational and supplemental information in regards to MS Legislative House Bill # 1523, an act to protect Mississippians from religious discrimination and allow their beliefs to permeate into private businesses. Also included are some responses from different individuals or organizations, both in support and in opposition of this Bill. Organization is by month and year.
  3. Public Records Requests: Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act requests made by individuals to the Governor and his administration in regards to various information. Included in the folders are the requests themselves and any correspondence about the request between the individual/party and the Governor and his staff. The folders also list the requester of the information. Organization is date, but the finding aid is organized by year. This material is also separated into four segments: 1) basic requests, 2) produced, 3) privileged, and 4) not responsive.
  4. Constituent Correspondence: This material pertains to individuals whom Governor Bryant and his Cabinet were both elected by and represent (ie voters). The corresponding folders include invitations, hand written letters, artwork, and emails from voters and companies to the Bryant administration for a variety of reasons; many of which deal with legislative decisions made by the governor. Arrangement is by month and year. This material is also separated into three segments: 1) basic constituent correspondence, 2) denial letters, and 3) “incomplete”.
  5. MDA: This material is made up of correspondence between Phil Bryant and his administration and MDA (Mississippi Development Authority). It mostly seems to deal with funding for projects within the state to improve infrastructure. Arrangement is by month and year.
  6. Policy Letters: This collection is made up of correspondence between Phil Bryant and his policy advisors. It consists of a wide variety of information including but not limited to: copies of Bills, project proposals, guidelines for programs, occasional schedule reminders, grant application information, and Q&A for reporters. Arrangement is by policy advisor and thereunder chronologically.
  7. Christmas Letters: Simply put a collection Christmas cards and invitations to parties addressed to and from Phil Bryant and his family. At this point, only 2013 has been sent to the Archives and was clearly labeled as such. It is possible there may be other Christmas cards in various other series regarding Bryant’s administration. Organization is by year.
  8. General Correspondence: This correspondence came to the Archives labeled as “General Correspondence”. Over time this correspondence may be reorganized into more specific categories. If you have looked through the rest of the material and could not find what you wanted, this may be a good last place to look. Arrangement is by month and year.
  9. Issues: This material was filed by the Bryant Administration under the title “issues”, but they can also be seen as subject files of sorts. These are files slowly put together over the course of Phil Bryant’s two terms as governor of Mississippi and contain detailed information about ongoing “issues” faced by the Bryant administration during these two terms. Included are copies of legislative Bills, action plans, correspondence, and summaries of “issues” and how to deal with them. Please be aware that some of these issues have dates included that predate Bryant’s administration, implying that he most likely inherited these from the previous administration(s) or encountered them on the campaign trail. Arrangement is by topic/issue and thereunder by year.
  10. Dignitary Thank-You Letters: Thank you letters to and from Phil Bryant to both foreign and domestic dignitaries for either hosting or being hosted with Phil Bryant. Arrangement is by year.
  11. Miscellaneous: Lastly, these files are a miscellaneous collection of different Boards and Agencies and hold information and correspondence on each with regard to the Bryant Administration. Arrangement is by topic and thereunder by year.
