Series 391: Amnesty Oaths. 1865.
Confederate Records (RG 9)

Oath certificates signed by male and female Mississippians seeking restoration of rights of citizenship in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, June-October 1865. Most consist of printed forms, while some are entirely handwritten statements, all uniformly containing the wording prescribed in President Andrew Johnson’s amnesty proclamation of May 29, 1865. Oaths were administered by both military officers and county officials, with some including a physical description of the signer.
