      Drawing by William R. Scott of his plan for a proposed “steam battering ram,” a steam-powered ironclad naval vessel equipped with a steam-powered battering ram. Also included are a letter from Scott in Charleston, South Carolina, to Mississippi Governor John J. Pettus, seeking his endorsement of the plan, December 20, 1862, along with a copy of the minutes of a sub-commission of South Carolina’s state commission on submarine batteries and torpedoes called in October 1862, for consideration of Scott’s design, which include transcriptions of several letters of endorsement.
