Series 414: Statewide Drainage Survey Working Documents. 1911-1941.
Planning Commission (RG 15).
Maps, profiles, charts, specifications, bid documents, excavation sheets, and other items related to drainage districts in Mississippi. These items were generated and compiled during the course of the Statewide Drainage Survey conducted by the State Planning Commission (and its successor, the Board of Development) and the Works Progress Administration. Since the engineers and other workers on the survey used pre-existing drainage district maps and data where available, some of the material in this series significantly predates the survey itself. However, a majority of these materials are the direct result of work by the Survey engineers and project planners.
The materials in this series are arranged by county as a way of giving some organization to these items. Many drainage districts actually cross county boundaries. Please see the tables on the following pages, which contain more detailed box contents. One of the tables is arranged alphabetically by county, and the other is arranged alphabetically by drainage district.
Note that the word “documents” in the box contents list below refers to bid documents, specifications, and other letter-sized items, as opposed to the oversized items which make up the bulk of this collection.
Historical NoteThe Statewide Drainage Survey was a joint project of the Works Progress Administration and the Mississippi State Planning Commission, meant to gather data on the various drainage districts within the state. The project was begun in 1938 and completed in 1940. The final results of the survey may be seen in Series 416, which contains the drainage district reports, and in Series 2482, which contains large county maps showing the drainage districts in those counties. |
