Series 434: General Essay Drafts. 1936-1942.
Work Projects Administration. Federal Writers' Project (RG 60)
Draft sections of narrative essays prepared by Writers’ Project field workers and sent in to project headquarters in Jackson. The essays were intended for use in various projects, including Mississippi: A Guide to the Magnolia State, the Mississippi section of America Eats (never published), and the Mississippi Factbook (also never published). Essays are both typed and handwritten; some drafts are copied verbatim from sources such as newspapers and published law codes. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
The majority of the subjects listed below are self-explanatory, but some warrant further description. Conveyance records filed under the subject Historic homes are transcribed ownership records for a handful of particular houses in Amite County. Essays filed under the subject General contain information on Mississippi’s state flag, animals, song, and so on. Essays filed under Counties, cities and towns contain general information on those subjects and are arranged alphabetically by county; e.g., information on Wilkinson County generally is followed by information on particular villages, towns and cities in Wilkinson County.
