Levee Boards (RG 20)
Records of the General Board of Levee Commissioners and the Liquidating Levee Board for the period 1851-1876. The General Board of Levee Commissioners was established by an act of the Legislature on December 2, 1858. The Board was Delta-wide, incorporating the counties of Tunica, Coahoma, Bolivar, Washington, Issaquena, and parts of Yazoo, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Panola, and Desoto. During the Civil War the Board's activities were suspended. In 1865 the counties of Bolivar, Washington, and Issaquena (known as the southern division) formed their own commission. In 1867 the debts accrued by the 1858 General Board came under the control of the Liquidating Levee Board, and in turn under the jurisdiction of the State Treasurer and Auditor. Due to this successive fiscal jurisdiction, information pertaining to the General Levee Board may appear under other boards or agencies.
The series consists primarily of financial records, with some correspondence and other official documents.
