Series 650: Levee Board District No. 1 Records. 1871-1882, n.d..
Levee Boards (RG 20)

Records of the Levee Board, District No. 1 for the period 1871-1882. District No. 1 was created by an act of the Legislature on March 17, 1871. Also known as the Upper Levee District, it incorporated the counties of Tunica, Coahoma, Tallahatchie, Panola, Desoto, and six townships in Sunflower. By 1876 the Board was bankrupt, and District No. 1 was abolished by an act of April 11, 1876. Control of its debts was given to the State Auditor and Treasurer. A further act of March 5, 1884, “forever abolished and dissolved” the district and control of their debts by the Auditor and Treasurer was revoked. Due to this successive fiscal jurisdiction, information pertaining to District No. 1 may appear under other boards or agencies. The series consists of financial records, reports, correspondence, minutes, bonds, petitions (including two 1873 petitions from James Lusk Alcorn as a Coahoma County landowner) and other official documents.
