Levee Boards (RG 20)

Records of the Liquidating Levee Board for the period 1868-1889. The Liquidating Levee Board was created by an act of the Legislature on February 13, 1867, to manage the payment of debts accumulated by the General Levee Board of 1858. The Board was embroiled in litigation and legislation concerning the land titles under its control. An act of April 11, 1876 abolished the office of commissioner and appointed the State Auditor and Treasurer as ex officio commissioners to manage the debts. Litigation and legislation concerning land titles in the Liquidating Levee District continued into the 20th century. Due to changes in jurisdiction, information ertaining to the Liquidating Levee Board may appear under other boards or agencies.
