Levee Boards (RG 20)
Records of the State Auditor and Treasurer as Ex Officio Levee Commissioners for the period 1875-1891, plus two bonds from 1860 and 1872, respectively. An act of the Legislature on April 11, 1876 abolished the office of Liquidating Levee Commissioner and appointed the State Auditor and Treasurer as ex officio commissioners. In doing so, the finances and land titles of the General Levee Board of 1858 and Levee District No. 2 were placed under state control. In addition, a parallel act of April 11, 1876 made the Auditor and Treasurer ex officio commissioners of Levee District No. 1. Considerable litigation and legislation followed. An act of March 5, 1884 “forever abolished and dissolved” District No. 1 and revoked the powers of the Auditor and Treasurer. Litigation and legislation concerning the Liquidating Levee District debt and land titles continued into the twentieth century.
The series consists primarily of financial records, with correspondence, reports and other official documents.
