Levee Boards (RG 20)
Records of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee Board for the period 1886-1919. The Board was created by an act of the Legislature on February 28, 1884. This Board’s district comprised the counties of Tunica, Coahoma, Desoto, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Sunflower, Leflore, and Yazoo. The 1890 constitution formally divided the state’s alluvial lands into two levee districts: The Mississippi Levee District, headquartered in Greenville, Washington County; and the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee District, headquartered in Clarksdale, Coahoma County. The levee board system formalized by the 1890 constitution remains intact. The series consists of financial records and other official documents.
