Series 682: Administrative Papers and Land Records (Transcripts). 1763-1783.
English Provincial Archives (RG 25).

Bound volumes of handwritten transcripts of selected original records in the British Archives pertaining to the settlement and oversight of British territory in the southern United States in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Most of these materials were part of the records of the British Province of West Florida under the administrations of George Johnstone and Peter Chester. Additional information about the selection and copying of these documents may be found in the fifth annual report of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History published in 1906 (MDAH Library Call No. 976.2, D44).

Volumes 1-9 and volume 19 are composed largely of correspondence (and enclosures) between officials in England and officials in West Florida. Volume 10 is composed of various types of land records (patents, grants, indentures, mortgages and leases) interspersed with some correspondence and financial accounts.

Included in these papers are directives from the King and his advisers, reports of territorial governance, financial accounts, minutes of proceedings at council meetings, statements of military affairs, and descriptions of daily life and culture (relationships with native Indian tribes, hardships, and difficulties).
