Series 740: Register of Artifacts. 1924-1937.
Dept. of Archives and History (RG 31). State Historical Museum (SG 8).
This register of archaeological artifacts was created by Henry Bascom Collins, Jr. in 1924. The initial inventory consisted of the Butler Collection, purchased by MDAH the previous year. Additional items were added to the register by Moreau B. C. Chambers when they were acquired by MDAH through archaeological investigations or by gift or loan. The artifacts are from Adams, Hinds, Madison, Warren, and Yazoo counties. The Butler Collection consists of 2,280 items, and is named for Brevoort Butler (1846-1908), an avid collector of archaeological artifacts, especially from Yazoo County, where he lived from 1879 until his death in 1908. The total number of cataloged items in the register is 2,644.1
