      Pardon and suspension files from Governor Theodore Bilbo’s second term in office. Files contain correspondence between inmates, their friends and relatives, local law enforcement officials, judges, and district attorneys concerning requests for pardons or suspensions, and handwritten and published petitions for executive clemency.

      Researchers should note that in addition to the files themselves, this series also contains two ledgers containing the certificates of pardon or suspensions of sentence issued by the governor. One ledger is bound (box 1579) and the second is loose (boxes 1454, 1455, 1456, and 1457). The bound ledger appears to contain more names than the loose ledger, but both ledgers contain only the names of those whose pardons or suspensions were granted. Also present is a card file with entries for suspensions granted to inmates whose last names begin with the letters K-Z (box 2053).

      Files are arranged alphabetically by inmate’s last name. Each ledger is also arranged alphabetically by last name.
