Series 108: Reconstruction Voter Lists and Election Returns. 1867-1869.
Creator: Secretary of State (RG 28).
Collection Summary: A compilation of election documents created under Congressional Acts of March 2 and 23 and July 19, 1867, and March 11, 1868, which restructured the election process in the former Confederate states. The 1867 materials are precinct books listing legal voters in fifteen counties in the state. The 1868 materials include a variety of lists for fourteen counties - those voting, those who did not vote, and individuals voting by affidavits - for the election of June 22-27, 1868. The 1869 materials include a published tabulation booklet giving results of the election of November 30 and December 1, 1869, and some information from fifty-three (53) counties. There are oversized election returns from five counties along with a variety of lists - registered voters who voted, registered who did not vote, and voters by affidavit. Oversized materials are housed separately with cross-reference sheets from the related counties. Researchers should note that there is no separate index of the names appearing on these lists.

Record Group History: The Mississippi Planning Commission was created by the Mississippi Senate via Senate Bill 551 in 1936. The Commission was tasked with creating a master plan for the physical development of the state and prepare a program for the continued development of major improvements in the state. Additional duties of the commission were the preparation of maps and surveys for the use of state agencies and the performance of administrative and engineering work throughout Mississippi. In 1940, the commission was abolished, and its duties were transferred to the newly created Board of Development.
