Series 112: Oaths of Office and Recommendations Correspondence. 1870-1944. Secretary of State (RG 28).
Oaths of office for various state and local officials following the Civil War. Two versions were used during Reconstruction: “…I will faithfully support the Constitution of the United States and of Mississippi” and “…I have never taken an oath to support the Constitution, and afterward engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.” There is also correspondence from chancery courts to the Secretary of State affirming that candidates had taken the oath required by law.
