Handwritten journals of the proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of Public Buildings, which include a financial record of the construction of various public buildings in Jackson, such as the State Capitol, Penitentiary, and Governor’s House. The journal in Box 6461 contains the minutes of the Board of Commissioners for the first 165 pages, and then transitions into accounting entries for the costs and expenditures associated with construction of the public buildings. Each entry in the journal contains the voucher number, cost, description of work done, recipient of the money, and (by 1840) the certification by the state auditor. The journal in Box 6463 continues the accounting entries from the previous journal. There is a typed photocopy and a microfilm copy of the 1836-1840 journal available to researchers.
